I action

A small, sunny village. It is inhabited by simple and ingenious people. A young peasant girl Giselle is rejoicing under then sun, the blue sky, the singing of the birds, and most of all, in the mirth of pure and trusting love, that has entered her life. She is in love, and confident that she is loved. The gamekeeper Hans, who vainly loves her, tries to persuade Giselle that her beloved Albrecht is not a simple peasant, but a nobleman, disguised to deceive her.
The gamekeeper slips into Albrecht’s rented home in the village, and finds a silver sword with a coat of arms on it. The gamekeeper is certain now, that Albrecht is hiding his true identity. A group of noblemen with a large retinue stop at the village on their way back from hunting. The peasants give a warm welcome to their rich guests. Albrecht is embarrassed by an unexpected encounter with the newcomers. He tries to hide that he knows them, because among them is… his bride Bathilde. At this moment, the gamekeeper shows everyone Albrecht’s sword and reveals his deception. Giselle is shaken by the treachery of her beloved. Her pure and bright world of faith, hope and dreams is destroyed. She loses her mind and dies.
II action
The Wilis – ghostly spirits of brides that died before their weddings – appear under the moonlight, among the tombs of the quiet village graveyard. They notice the gamekeeper. Tormented by guilt, he came to visit Giselle’s grave. Following the order of the merciless Queen of the Willis, Myrtha, they surround Hans in a ghostly circle, and dance until he drops dead on the ground. Albrecht too, is unable to forget Giselle. He comes to her grave in the dead of night. The Wilis immediately surround the young man. He too shall suffer the same horrible fate as the gamekeeper. But Giselle’s spirit appears to protect him from the wrath of the Wilis. The girl’s pure and selfless love guards and saves Albrecht. The white phantom Wilis disappear with the first rays of rising sun. Giselle’s ethereal spirit disappears as well, but she will always live in Albrecht’s memory as eternal regrets and dreams of a lost love – a love that is stronger than death itself.
